    Taboo:

Taboos are social prohibitions, orders. There are lot of rituals in it. The power and
importance of Taboo is equal to law in the tribe and its violation is considered a serious social
and religious offence. Taboo is found not only in tribes of Jharkhand but also in every race in
the world. There is a provision of taboo in the social structure of every tribe. This taboo may be
in eating and drinking, in marriages and in physical relationships. Tribals believe that the
supernatural forces punish those who do not follow the norms of taboo. That is why, they
observe it with great caution. Taboos prevalent among tribes are given below:

    (i)    Their totem is very respectable. Thus, it is prohibited to either destroy or disturb it.
(ii)    Marriage in the same gotra is prohibited because physical relationship in
the same clan (gotra) is strictly forbidden.
(iii)   Santhali women are prohibited from going to the "Manjhisthan".
(iv)   Women of "Ho" 'Yibe are forbidden to cultivate or touch the plough. (v) Women of the
" inda" tribe do not plant paddy. They are forbidden from climbing the roof.
(vi)   Married daughters of the village of the "Munda" tribe are forbidden to
take food offered to God (prasad) of Sarhul.
(vii)  Munda women are forbidden to go to the cemetery ground for funeral rites.
(viii)  Similar to Hindu women, the pregnant women of the tribes do not go to
             the temple for worship.

    Totem

    •      There are many beliefs and customs prevalent in the tribes of Jharkhand. The social life
of the tribes is balanced and controlled on the basis of these beliefs. Totem is
one such belief. The relation of Totem is with clan (gotra). When a member of any
gotra determines a symbol for the clan (gotra), then, that symbol becomes a Totem for the
clan. To have faith, belief and respect for this Totem is called - Totemism. Every Totem
has a supernatural relation with a particular tree, animal, plant and other  natural things.
That is why each person of that tribe establishes a relationship with that  particular Totem.
They consider them as their protectors. They have faith in them and fear their wrath. That
object, with which a tribe establishes a relationship, is called a Totem. Tortoise is a clan
of any tribe, then for the people ofthat tribe, the symbol for that clan will be the animal
called tortoise. Tortoise will be the Totem for that clan. Giving respect to tortoise, not
eating or hunting it etc. will be called Totemism. Members of a clan give great importance
to Totem. If Totem is a plant, it is not cut or  used.
