Marriage System













    •        Tribals of Jharkhand marry within their own caste.
    •        Marriage within the same clan (gotra) is prohibited.
    •        Single marriage system (monogamy) is generally prevalent in tribes.
    •        "Tudaki Dipil Wapala" is an established norm among tribes. In this system,
             the groom brings home his bride and then marries her.

    Types of Marriage

           Purchase Marriage: In this marriage, the bridegroom has to give wealth to the parents or         
           relatives of the bride in order to marry her. This system is mainly prevalent in "Munda", "Santhal",
           "Ho", "Oraon", " Khadiya" etc. Purchase marriage in Santhali is called "Sadai Bapla".  In the
           Munda tribe, the money given for wife is called "Kuri Gonong". Purchase marriage in Ho-tribe is
           known as "Andi".  Khadiya tribe calls this marriage "Asali Vivah" (pure marriage ).  In Birhor tribe,
           this marriage is called "Sadar Bapla".

           Service Marriage: Ifthe groom is unable to pay for his bride, he serves his 'would be father-
            in-law and mother-in-law in order to get the right to marry their daughter. This system is mainly
           prevalent in "Oraon", "Munda" and "Santhal" communities.  Santhali call this marriage "Ghardi
           Jawai Bapla". Birhor tribe calls this marriage "Kiring Jamai Bapla".

           Exchange Marriage: It is a "Gulta" marriage. In this marriage, the brother arranges the         
           marriage of his sister with a person from another family and in turn marries the sister of that
           person. It is prevalent in most of the tribes of Jharkhand.  Birhar tribe calls this marriage "Golhar
           Bapla". Santhali calls this marriage "Golaiti Bapla".

           Hath Marriage: In this marriage, the girl starts living in her lover's house. This marriage is
           mainly prevalent in the "Ho" and "Birhar" tribe. This marriage is calied "Unrespected Marriage"
            in  the "Ho tribe". Birhor tribe calls this marriage "Bola Bapla".
           
           Abduction Marriage: In this marriage, girls are kidnapped and then married. This marriage
           is mainly prevalent in "Oraon", "Munda", "I lo", "Khadiya" and "Birhor" tribes. Maximum marriages
           of this type take place in "Souriya Pahariya".

           Co-Migration Marriage: In this marriage, bride and groom elope without the consent of
            parents. It is prevalent among the "Munda", "Khadiya" and "Birhor" tribes.

           Widow  Marriage: This marriage is more prevalent in "Munda", "Oraon" and "Santhal" tribes.
