The rivers flowing in Jharkhand can be divided into two parts. The rivers that flow from the southern portion of the Chotanagpur plateau towards the East and South. Important among them are Damodar, Swamarekha, Mayurakshi, Gumani, Ajay, South Koyal, Barakar and Shankh. The rivers that flow from Chotanagpur plateau towards North or merge with their contributories Sone, North Koyal, Punpun, Phalgu, Sakari and Panchanan are important among them. 1. Damodar River: • Origin : The plateau of Chotanagpur (Tori area of Latehar district). • Muhana (Mouth of River) : Hoogli river near Kolkata in West Bengal. • Area of flow: Hazaribagh, Giridh, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Latehar, Ranchi, and Lohardaga. • Contributory Rivers: Barakar, Bokaro, Konar, Bhera etc. • Damodar River is the biggest and longest river of Jharkhand. • Dhanbad and Giridih are situated on the banks of this river. • This river is also known as the "the sorrow of Bengal". • It is the most polluted river of Jharkhand. • It is also known as "Dev" river. 2.Swarnarekha River : • Origin : Plateau of Chotanagpur (Nagari, Ranchi) • Muhana: Bay of Bengal • Area of flow : districts of Ranchi and Singhbhum. • Contributory rivers : Jumar, Raru, Kanchi, Kharkhai, Sanjay etc. • Swarnarekha is the only river of Jharkhand, which falls independently into the Bay of Bengal. 3. Barakar River : • Origin : Northern Chotanagpur plateau • Muhana : Damodar River. • Area of flow : Hazaribagh, Giridih and Dhanbad. 4. Sone River : • Origin : Hills of Amarkantak • Muhana : Ganga River. • Area of flow : Palamau, Garhwa • Contributory river : North Koyal 5. North Koyal River : • Origin : Middle portion of the Ranchi plauteau (Piska) • Muhana : Sone River • Area of flow : Ranchi, Hazarib gh and Palamau • Contributory river : Auranga and Amanat 6. South Koyal River : • Origin : Chotanagpur plauteau • Muhana : Shankh River • Area of flow : Lohardaga, Gumla, West Singhbhum and Ranchi • Contributory river : Karo 7. Shankh River : • Origin : Chainpur block of Gumla district • Muhana : South Koyal river • Area of flow : Gumla 8. Ajay River : • Origin: Munger (Bihar) • Muhana : Bhagirathi River near Katwa (West Bengal) • Area of flow : Deoghar, Dumka • Contributory River : Pathro and Jayanti 9. Mor or Mayurakshi River : • Origin : From Tiyur or Trikut hill (Deoghar) • Muhana : Ganga (West Bengal) • Area of flow : Dumka, Sahebganj, Deoghar and Godda • Contributory River: Dhoai, Tipra, Pusro, Bhamri, Dawna etc. 10. Gumani River : • Origin : Hills of Rajmahal • Muhana : Ganga River (West Bengal) • Area of tlow : Sahebgaiij and Godda 11. Brahmani River : • Origin,: Dudhwa Hill (Dumka) • Muhana : Ganga • Contributory river : Gumro and Airo 12. Bansloi River: • Origin : Bans Hill of Godda district. • Muhana : Ganga 13. Phalgu River: • Origin : North portion of Chotanagpur plateau. • Its mainstream is called "Niranjan" or "Lilajan" 14. Sakri River: • Origin : North Chotanagpur platedu • This river is called "Sumagadhi" in the Ramayana. 15. Panchanan/ Chanan River: • Origin : Chotanagpur plateau • This river is called "Panchanan" because it is made up of live water streams Rives of Jharkhand: Memorable Facts • Damodar Valley Corporation was established in 1948 on the line Tennessey River Valley Corporation of America. • Damodar Valley Corporation was established in order to control floods and loss of property. • Jamshedpur is situated on the confluence of the Swarnrekha and Kharkai rivers. • Kanada Dam is situated on the Mayurakshi River. • Tilaiya Dam has been constructed on the Barakar River. • Ayyar Dam has bee: constructed on the Damodar River. • Bokaro Dam has been constructed on the Bokaro River. • Maithan Dam has been constructed on the Barakar River. • Konar Dam has been constructed on the Konar River. • Panchet Dam has been constructed on the confluence of the Damodar and Barakar River. • The maximum number of waterfalls is situated in Ranchi district. • Particles of Gold are found on the sands of the Swarnarekha, Gara, Damodar and Koyal Rivers. • The Ganga River passes through the border of the Sahebganj district of Jharkhand. |
