Jharkhand's agriculture is rainfed and the monsoon is ridden with
uncertainty. Therefore irrigation becomes more important here
Approx 11% of the total cultivable land of Jharkhand is irrigated.
58.3% of the total irrigated land is irrigated by surface water and
                                                           41.7% by ground water.

    Means of Irrigation

    WELLS:
This is the oldest and most commonly used means of irrigation in Jharkhand. 29.5% of the total
irrigated land of Jharkhand is irrigated with the help of wells. Gumla district comes first from the point
of view of well-based irrigation (87.2% of the total irrigated land). Giridih (77.9%), Ranchi (71.4%),
Dhanbad (56.2%), Hazaribagh (52.7%) and Singhbhum (17.5%) next come.

    TUBEWELLS
Tubewell is the well of the modem times. Water is extracted from deeper levels of earth through a pipe
with the help of electricity or diesel driven pump sets. Limited development of tube wells has taken
place in Jharkhand particularly due to hardness of the rocks in the plateau region. 8.4% of the total
irrigated area of Jharkhand is irrigated through tubewells. Tubewells are used the most in Lohardaga
(32.6% of the total irrigated area) and least in Deoghar district (3.8%)

    PONDS
Ponds are another important means of surface irrigation. Ponds have been the main means of
irrigation since the ancient times in Jharkhand. Most of the irrigation is carried out by means of ponds
in the Deoghar district (49.3% of the total irrigated land).Next comes Dhanbad (43.8%), Sahebganj
    (27.7%), Dumka (27.7%) and Godda (26.6%).

    CANALS
Physical environment of Jharkhand is not suitable for canal
irrigation. Yet small dams have been constructed on the
rivers of Jharkhand and canals have been taken out from
the reservoirs which are used for irrigation. 17.13% of the
total irrigated land of Jharkhand is irrigated with the help of
canals. Canal irrigation is mainly used in Singhbhum region.
