Jharkhand's agriculture is rainfed and the monsoon is ridden with uncertainty. Therefore irrigation becomes more important here Approx 11% of the total cultivable land of Jharkhand is irrigated. 58.3% of the total irrigated land is irrigated by surface water and 41.7% by ground water.
WELLS: This is the oldest and most commonly used means of irrigation in Jharkhand. 29.5% of the total irrigated land of Jharkhand is irrigated with the help of wells. Tubewells are used the most in Lohardaga (32.6% of the total irrigated area) and least in Deoghar district (3.8%) PONDS Ponds are another important means of surface irrigation. CANALS Physical environment of Jharkhand is not suitable for canal irrigation. Yet small dams have been constructed on the rivers of Jharkhand and canals have been taken out from the reservoirs which are used for irrigation. 17.13% of the total irrigated land of Jharkhand is irrigated with the help of canals.
