Mesra Deemed University Ranchi EDUCATION SYSTEM OF JHARKHAND Charles Grant is considered to be the father of the modem education system in India. Christian missionaries and Indian intellectuals have played an important role in the development of modem education in the State. First of all, Gossner Evengenical Lutheren Church established a school in Ranchi in 1845. Gossner Mission established the Gossner High School in Ranchi in the year 1856. For higher education, Dublin University Mission established the St. Columba's College in Hazaribagh in the year 1899. It was the first, degree college ofJharkhand. The Roman Catholic Mission established St. Xavier's College on 7th July, 1944. In the beginning, it was an intermediate coliege. Proper studies began in the year 1948. At present, for higher education, there are four universities in Jharkhand. They are Ranchi University, Ranchi (1960); Birsa Agriculture University, Ranchi (1981); Siddhu Kanhu University, Dumka (1992); and Vinobha Bhave University, Hazaribagh (1992). There are three Engineering Colleges in Jharkhand. They are: BIT, Sindri (Dhanbad), Birla Institute of Technology (Mesra, Ranchi) and R.I.T (now N.I.T), (Adityapur, Jamshedpur). There are three medical colleges in the State. They are: Rajendra Medical College, Ranchi (1960), Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Jamshedpur (1964) and Pataliputra Medical College, Dhanbad (1974). They are - Homeopathic College, Ranchi and Homeopathic College and Hospital, Dumka. There are eleven polytechnic colleges in Jharkhand. They are located at Dhanbad, Ranchi, Adityapur, Khunti, Latehar and Dumka. Besides these, Jamshedpur, Ranchi and Bokaro have Women's Polytechnic Colleges. For Law studies, Chotanagpur Law College is located at Ranchi. There are two forestry colleges - College of Forestry, Ranchi and Faculty of Forestry, Ranchi. There are six major laboratories and research centers in Jharkhand. Primary education is given from class I to class VIII, in government primary and middle schools. Secondary school education is provided up to the 10th standard. The Jharkhand Academic Council provides certificates to students of 10th standard clearing the matric examination. Intermediate (10+2) students are provided certificates by the Jharkhand Academic Council, Ranchi. The University awards a degree to students completing 15 years of study (10+2+3). In Jharkhand, the syllabus has been framed according to the CBSE Board. Work has begun to establish the Nilamber Pitamber University in Medinagar and National Vidhi university in Ranchi. 25 thousand para teachers have been recruited in order to strengthen elementary education. Teachers have been deployed in their home districts. Mid day Food Scheme' has been launched in all government's primary and middle schools. By wavering the fees, government has taken an important step in raising the education level. Jharkhand is an educationally backward state. Here the literacy rate of 53.6% is below the national average rate, which is 64.84%. The male literacy rate is 67.3 % and the female literacy rate is 38.9%. The highest literacy rate is in East Singhbhum (69.42 %). Pakur has the lowest literacy rate of 30.54 %. The literacy rate of the state was 41.39 % in 1991 whereas it was 53.6% in 21101. So in the last decade the literacy rate has increased by 12%. In order to increase the literacy rate in Jharkhand, the "Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan"(SSA), "Gram Shiksha Abhiyan", Mid-day meal and Female literacy Schemes have been launched. The aim of Jharkhand Education Project is to create general awareness among the people regarding education. Under this project, all primary and middle school teachers undergo a one-day training programme, "Ujala I" and "Ujala 11". Para teachers are also trained under this programme. SSA has been executed from April 2001 in all districts of Jharkhand. Under this scheme, maintenance of school instruments,employment of para teachers, behavioural education, teacher's requirements (chalk, duster etc.), Mid Day Meal, free clothing, intellectual development of children, facilities for the handicapped, conversion of primary to upper primary and building and maintenance of school buildings are provided. Under this scheme, 3747 Education Guarantee Centres have been upgraded to Primary Schools, 1366 primary schools have been upgraded to Middle Schools and 298 Primary Education Guarantee Centres have been upgraded to Upper Primary Education Guarantee Centres. In order to increase the education level and the literacy rate, Jharkhand Government is making constant endeavors. So, the "Manav Sansadhan Vibhag" is providing NCERT books free of cost in the Primary and Middle Schools. In the year 2005, 11 colleges under the Ranchi University and 12 colleges under the Sindhu -Kanhu and Vinobha Bhave University have started B.Ed. Course. |
